Holy place in Jerusalem

After the Last Supper at the Cenacle and the agony in the Garden of Olives, the path of the Passion of Christ leads us to Saint-Peter in Gallicantu.

Just a few metres from the Old City of Jerusalem and its ramparts, Saint-Peter in Gallicantu (from Latin “galli cantu”, meaning “where the rooster has crowed”) is built on the Eastern slopes of the Mount Zion. This spot is believed to be the location of Caiaphas’ palace.

Important stopover for pilgrims, this place commemorates:

  • the appearance of Jesus before the High Priest Caiaphas
  • the death sentence of Jesus imposed by the Sanhedrin
  • the Denial of Peter and his repentance when the rooster crows

Pilgrims from all over the world come here to walk the way of Christ and relive a significant moment of His Passion. The sanctuary of Saint-Peter in Gallicantu carries a message of mercy, manifested by Jesus’ look upon Peter after his third denial. A look through which Peter felt all the mercy and forgiveness of the Savior.

"The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: ’Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.’ And he went outside and wept bitterly."(Luke 22, 61-62)

This message still moves us today since tradition places this event here in this area. It is important to highlight this message by discovering the “stones that speak to us”. This is the purpose of the visit.
